EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, Niskayuna Central School District announced that a poll of 1,290 voters (students and staff from grades K-12) selected Silver Knights as the new mascot nickname. The poll was held after a statewide ban on Indigenous names took effect in May (the ban required a fresh team identity) and Silver Hawks trailed close behind. News10 ABC
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Cornell University study found that wild bobcats in New York were exposed to avian influenza—over half of the 16 bobcats tested showed antibodies, with four revealing signs of the H5N1 strain and one dying—raising concerns over wildlife health. CBS 6 Albany
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters at New York’s military bases gathered on March 26 at the Stratton Air National Guard base to demand equal benefits such as the same pay and injury support as state firefighters. Lawmakers introduced bills in committee that would offer these benefits—meant to boost recruitment and readiness. News10 ABC
- ➤ Federal budget cuts have frozen a USDA program and put the Regional Food Bank, which feeds 350,000 people each month, at risk of losing 200 trucks of produce and protein next year—about 6.5 million meals will be lost. The bank also faces a shortfall of a million dollars in funds for New York farmers and plans to boost its retail rescue program and fundraising to cover the gap. CBS 6 Albany
- ➤ At a Rotterdam Town Board meeting, board member Joe Mastrionni pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for stealing Assembly Member Santabarbara's campaign mailer+ he dodged media questions and will pay $250 in fines+ his former campaign manager said he is expected to release a statement later this week. - ➤ CDTA named Frank Annicaro as its new CEO after a unanimous vote. He worked at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and will take over from interim CEO Michael Collins on May 12 — replacing former CEO Carm Basile who retired December 31 —. WNYT

- ➤ Latham native Jeff Hoffman (31) will begin his 10th MLB season today with the Toronto Blue Jays after signing a three-year, $33 million deal (drafted in 2014) with the team. He will pitch in the season opener against the Baltimore Orioles following a breakout season with the Phillies. CBS 6 Albany
