BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ambition Coffee & Eatery in Schenectady celebrated 25 years in business — the milestone was marked with photos that highlighted its long history of serving the community.  The Daily Gazette
  • Metaphysical shops in the Capital Region offer crystals, incense and tarot cards for anyone wanting to explore spiritual items — Grounded Goddess at 127 Jay Street in Schenectady is one local option. CULTURE NEWS

  • Schenectady County officials and Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara released an engineering report on the miSci building that said the museum is safe and needs repair. The report recommended a new roof and updated HVAC system — and $10M in state funds was secured for upgrades and expansion once the museum board approves the plan.  CBS 6 Albany
  • An engineering report on the miSci building found it is structurally sound—$8.5M in needed upgrades were identified. Officials will use the study to guide future decisions on building improvements.  The Daily Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union hosted the annual Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on April 5 where 300 students and faculty from nearly 50 colleges shared 90 talks on math topics including algebra, data science, and graph theory. The event featured panel discussions and a keynote speech from Álvaro Lozano-Robledo — a professor from the University of Connecticut — that showed Union's commitment to undergraduate research and learning.  Union College

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Graduate student Caitlin Williams is studying how winter ice affects algal growth in the littoral zone of Lake George. She uses light and temperature sensors attached to cinder blocks—tools to measure lake changes—and clay tiles to check algae levels.  Union College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Clerk Cara Ackerley clarified that starting May 7, residents who plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal facilities will need a REAL ID or Enhanced ID for travel; those without such plans may upgrade their current driver’s license later to avoid long wait times + confusion over the new requirements. This clarification follows the federal mandate for identification compliance.  CBS 6 Albany
