COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups in Schenectady have set up clean-up events throughout April — the events will honor Earth Day and help keep neighborhoods tidy. Organizers said the events will take place in various areas and invite residents to join the effort.  The Daily Gazette
  • Local businesses are hosting fundraisers to support Lavender, a dog found injured in Schenectady nearly two weeks ago with severe head and facial injuries—she had her ear cut off and broken teeth—and is now recovering at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Speckled Hen is collecting funds until today, The Nest 518 raised over $2,700, Crackling Embers Candle Company is donating a portion of its sales, and Dogtopia gave $1,000 while police investigate an arrest for abandoning her.  WNYT
  • A recent Siena College poll found that 68% of Capital Region residents—including those in Schenectady—say their quality of life is excellent or good, but only 25% say things are getting better. Many residents are worried about housing availability—75% rate it poorly—and are divided on job and education opportunities.  CBS 6 Albany

CRIME NEWS

  • A Rotterdam man was arraigned in Schenectady County Court Friday on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon after he stabbed his 79-year-old mother in the neck at Cobblestone Court—Patrick Haggerty, 39, pleaded not guilty and will return on May 9 at 9:30 a.m.  WNYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • WAMC Northeast Public Radio announced plans to sell its performing arts studio The Linda on Central Avenue. The move follows its new live radio series that will focus on on-location programs across the Capital Region—events at the venue will wind down after June.  News10 ABC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials are debating Discovery Reform changes that will delay state spending by at least two weeks. Governor Hochul met with district attorneys while Assemblymember Gabriella Romero urged fairer rules—lawmakers will meet again Tuesday to seek a resolution.  CBS 6 Albany
