- ➤ Union film studies students won the Best Original Screenplay award at the Refractions Student Film Festival at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Their 15-minute thriller The Shadow, which tells the story of a college student who finds an old camcorder, was made in the Suspense course taught by James de Sève. Union College
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Last winter, Robert McFarland gave his Schenectady home of 60 years to Union College to fund a scholarship for local students—he said his gift honors the college's role in sports and culture. The college will sell the home to support future Union scholars. Union College
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said mass layoffs at Watervliet Arsenal were halted after Army Secretary Dan Driscoll confirmed that nearly 300 civilian workers would keep their jobs. The proposed cuts would have reduced production by 60 to 70% and weakened the arsenal’s defense role in the Capital Region — a move that Schumer said protected national security. CBS 6 Albany
- ➤ At a press conference Monday night—hosted by the NAACP in Schenectady—the group said the board of elections rejected signatures for city council candidates Marion Porterfield and Damonni Farley to silence Black leadership. - ➤ New York's Cooling Assistance Benefit program opened on April 15 to help eligible households buy or install a cooling unit (up to $800 for a portable system or $1,000 for a wall unit) during warm weather.
