COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region will host its annual Smart, Strong, Bold awards event (theme: Summer Camp) at Duo at the Dunes in Albany to honor partners and initiatives that inspire smart, strong, and bold girls.  CBS 6 Albany
  • The Schenectady Boys and Girls Club received a $1 million state grant (secured by Sen. Jim Tedisco in 2017) to support its local programs.  The Daily Gazette
  • Schenectady’s Hometown Heroes banners will line State Street through May 15 to honor 80 veterans and celebrate their service downtown.  The Daily Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local author Meaghan Baxter released a children’s book, My Mama Moves Different, inspired by her mother’s battle with MS + she will host a book launch at Sheehy Palmer VFW on June 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. to help kids cope with loss.  CBS 6 Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal documents reveal concerns over plans to close the Schenectady VA clinic on Aug. 28 and shift care to Clifton Park; local officials worry many veterans may face transportation issues (about 1,300 live near the current clinic) while the VA promises improved staffing.  WNYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 3,000 Capital Region students took part today in V-Healthy Day to learn about measuring blood pressure and nutrition from the Center for Vascular Awareness—fifteen high schools including Shenendehowa participated and the program also awarded $50,000 in scholarships.  CBS 6 Albany
  • On Friday, May 8, advocates marked World Ovarian Cancer Day by launching a new research exchange and living lab that collects data from patients with ovarian and uterine cancers — a step to improve treatment and encourage knowing family history.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Ellis Medicine offers immediate mental health support for youth (ages 4.5 to 17) and adults at its Family Room and Living Room in Schenectady, located at 1023 State Street. They provide walk-in services Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to reduce the need for emergency visits.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Donna Kirby has cared for patients at St. Peter’s Hospital for 43 years while her daughter Molly, inspired by her mom’s kindness, now works alongside her as part of this week’s celebration of nurses and mothers.  WNYT
