COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County announced on Thursday that it will build five new homes along Rankin Avenue and Landon Terrace on properties where blighted buildings once stood—plans that will revitalize vacant lots in the neighborhood.  The Daily Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-and-a-half-story house on Avenue B in Schenectady caught fire early Saturday morning—firefighters contained the attic blaze and treated two injured firefighters—before the fire spread further.  The Daily Gazette
  • State Police rescued a driver from a vehicle in the Mohawk River near lock 12 on Saturday morning—he was conscious at the time and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while crews responded to a fire at 1525 Avenue B Saturday morning—crews contained the fire in about an hour at a 2.5-story home where three occupants were safely evacuated and some roof damage was reported.  WNYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • CBS6 celebrated the moms behind the scenes on Mother's Day today by sharing photos and stories from staff both on-air and off, including touching moments from past events and special memories with loved ones—reporting also on moms-to-be with upcoming births on May 19, August 3, and later this month. The segment honored personal milestones and the important roles these women play in the community.  CBS 6 Albany

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Union, the 35th annual Steinmetz Symposium showcased over 500 student projects, including a presentation by environmental science major Daniela Aleman Perez ’25, who tracked 930 bird collisions on campus from last September to November — highlighting risks to local bird populations. The event also featured engineering displays, dance and art exhibits, and culminated with senior awards on Prize Day.  Union College
  • College officials announced Prize Day winners with a series of awards honoring students for excellence in subjects including classics, literature, science and the arts. Winners such as Cora Bessette, Brendan Cullen and Gabriella Baratier earned recognition plus many prizes celebrated achievements in research, creative writing and leadership.  Union College
  • At Prize Day Saturday at Memorial Chapel, Eastwood Yeboah ’25 received the Frank Bailey Prize for his service to Union College while Gabby Baratier ’25 earned the Josephine Daggett Prize for her character and academic excellence. The event presented over 100 awards for leadership, academics, and community service—highlighting a key annual celebration at the college.  Union College
