COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Felmon Davis, a professor emeritus at Union who taught since 1980, died May 7 in Mannheim, Germany at age 76. He founded an undergraduate philosophy journal and mentored many students—his work left a lasting mark on the local academic community.  Union College
  • As Memorial Day approaches, the Schenectady Jewish Community Center outdoor pool will open next weekend and aquatic director Dan Furman stressed that an adult must watch children at all times — families can follow his tips to ensure a safe start to summer.  CBS 6 Albany

CRIME NEWS

  • Schenectady man Edward Tomchek aged 46 was arrested on a warrant from Malta Town Court for allegedly stealing more than $3,000 from a business using fake checks; he faces charges of grand larceny in the third degree, identity theft and forgery and remains in Schenectady County Jail.  CBS 6 Albany

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Amtrak announced today that service between Schenectady and New York City will be reduced as rehabilitation on the East River Tunnel forces the Adirondack and Maple Leaf lines to combine into one train—leading to longer travel times, extra stops, and increased crowding. Union College students and other commuters now face up to a one-hour and a half layover in Albany and difficulties with ticket purchases until the project ends in three years.  Concordiensis

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced an $8 million aid increase for SUNY Schenectady and community colleges statewide as part of this year's state budget. The funds will support student success, faculty retention, workforce training and affordability.  WNYT
  • On May 12, Union’s Dean of Students emailed the campus community to announce that dining changes will start in fall—this includes the permanent closure of West Dining Hall and new meal plans with more meal swipes. Other plans will expand seating at Reamer Dining Hall—by adding about 80 seats—and enhance dining options at Rathskeller, Dutch Hollow, the Bookstore and College Park Hall while returning mobile ordering for greater convenience.  Concordiensis
