CRIME NEWS

  • Daval Bryrams, 22, pleaded guilty Monday to possessing three kilograms of cocaine and planning to sell it—he traveled to New York City on March 11 to pick up the drugs and was arrested around 9:30 p.m. in Schenectady alongside Angel Madera by State Police.  WNYT
  • A woman who survived a domestic shooting in an attempted murder-suicide on North End Drive in Schenectady lost her hand and will face further surgery while a fundraiser at Tooley’s on Broadway in Rotterdam is scheduled this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm to support her recovery and care for her autistic son—over 40 local businesses and community members have already donated.  WNYT
  • A Troy man, Daval Bryams (22), admitted he carried three kilograms of cocaine he planned to distribute after traveling from the Capital Region to New York City and back to Schenectady, and he now faces up to 40 years in prison.  News10 ABC

  • The upcoming Bands on Broadway concert series will run as planned this summer in downtown Schenectady—city officials turned financial oversight over to a local nonprofit after the city council rejected a plan to manage the series.  The Daily Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New York’s electric grid is under strain as old power plants close faster than new ones open—electricity demand rises from new users like factories and data centers. The NYISO report warned that shrinking extra power capacity may lead to shortages during cold, high-demand periods.  News10 ABC

  • Glenmont Job Corps received a termination notice on May 29 and will close completely by June 30 as the U.S. Department of Labor pauses operations amid a $140 million deficit and serious incident reports—over 250 students, most of whom live on campus, now face homelessness and must move out by Friday. Local leaders encourage calls to congressional representatives to address the crisis affecting these young people.  News10 ABC
  • Dr. Michael Brophy has been named the new president of Hudson Valley Community College, effective August 1—he brings more than 35 years of experience from various higher education roles. Dr. Brophy will be available for media interviews today.  CBS 6 Albany
