Good morning, Schenectady. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 22nd of June.

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the historic USS Slater, veterans and families dropped flowers into the water to honor World War II destroyer escorts and the sailors lost during the war. The event noted that over 500 escorts guarded Allied convoys from enemy attacks and the ship served the Greek Navy for 40 years before returning to the U.S. in 1993—its last destroyer escort afloat.  CBS 6 Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The former armory at Armory Studios hosted a gun buyback on Saturday in Schenectady that collected 367 firearms — including 147 assault weapons and 65 long guns — as police let anyone surrender their guns without questions. Attorney General Letitia James noted that similar programs have removed nearly 10,000 firearms from New York since 2019, and authorities said the guns will be destroyed after processing.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Governor Kathy Hochul signed new legislation on Saturday that now lets polling sites give voters water—meant to help them cope with extreme heat. The law repeals an old rule that once punished the provision of small incentives and improves voter safety during early voting ending today.  CBS 6 Albany

HEALTH NEWS

  • Municipalities in the Capital Region are opening cooling centers and extending hours at pools and splash pads today as a heatwave begins and heat advisories are in effect + residents are advised to call ahead to confirm times and stay hydrated in the extreme heat.  News10 ABC
