COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sycamore Collaborative has been feeding local children free meals during summer and now expects to serve 10,000 meals (a 40% rise from last year) with help from community volunteers (including local church groups and a school district partnership) in a program that kicked off last week and runs through August 29.  News10 ABC

CRIME NEWS

  • Senator Jim Tedisco condemned the alleged animal cruelty at A Time for Paws in Halfmoon — where the owner faces charges under Buster's Law for reportedly leaving French bulldog Gus to die in the heat — and he is urging lawmakers to impose harsher penalties, including longer jail time, increased fines, and a ban on pet ownership for convicted abusers.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Animal control officials removed dozens of abused dogs and cats from A Time Four Paws in Clifton Park after finding the animals cramped in tiny cages and neglected, with one French bulldog dead and 57-year-old Yvette Giavanni now facing felony charges (second degree criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to animals).  WNYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union students are engaged in diverse summer research with 155 participants working on projects in biology, environmental science, and English under faculty guidance— a poster session to showcase their work will be held July 24 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Schaffer Library.  Union College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill passed by both chambers of the Legislature will allow school-based health centers—including the one at Schenectady High School—to remain in the Medicaid fee-for-service system after centers faced uncertainty from a new payment system on April 1. The bill now awaits the governor’s signature and will secure free physical, mental, chronic, and dental health services for more than 250,000 students statewide.  CBS 6 Albany
