Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 14th of July.
Good morning, Schenectady.
🏘️ Community
Andrew Pieniazek, a Schenectady Navy veteran, received a new roof on his house and garage today on Elizabeth Street through the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project (a national initiative partnering with Purple Heart Homes to donate roofing materials and labor).
Wildwood, a local provider for people with disabilities, expanded its daily programming at a Schenectady center under three months old, but a DOJ memo from last month may cut state support that helps residents stay in the community — local leaders are now reviewing safeguards.
🏛️ Government
Proctor's Collaborative has received nearly $1 million in new state funds as Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara secured $968,000 through the Alive Downtowns! initiative to support local projects (this funding aims to boost downtown efforts).
Niskayuna officials are stepping up e-bike safety education on Balltown Road (a speed radar display was installed near the high school to guide riders on state rules).
Town leaders are also considering a local ordinance for helmet requirements and planning road improvements funded by a $1 million state grant.
The county removed red road markings in Niskayuna (which some locals called an eyesore) that were meant to calm traffic and improve parking.
The project is now paused pending review after community concerns were raised.
