CRIME NEWS

  • A Colonie man named John Rudat was stabbed in Germany while helping two young women who were being harassed; he had surgery for a deep facial wound and is now recovering, and he is the younger brother of a local police officer (he is preparing to become a paramedic) (his condition remains stable).  WNYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 477 new first-year students, including many from diverse backgrounds, are set to begin their journey at Union as they move in on August 29 and join a refreshed orientation focused on community and leadership. Convocation will be held on Sept. 2 at Memorial Chapel—featuring faculty prizes and celebrations—followed by classes starting Sept. 3.  Union College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Schenectady police will soon add their first bomb-sniffing dog to the squad— the new K9 will help detect explosives and support public safety.  The Daily Gazette
  • Schenectady Councilman Joseph Mancini announced he will resign his seat effective Sept.—12, leaving more than two years remaining on his term.  The Daily Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ellis Medicine Pediatric Care received a $25,000 state grant to boost its HealthySteps program—supporting early childhood care for over a thousand local families, with 90% of them on Medicaid. Assemblymember Phil Steck said the funds will help connect families to specialist services before a crisis arises.  CBS 6 Albany

  • Jackson Demolition Services demolished the former Sev's Pre-owned Luxury Autos building at 1650 Erie Blvd—Sunday, Aug. 25, ending the legacy auto shop near Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady.  The Daily Gazette

  • Ninety-year-old Boyajian is known in Schenectady County for his love of tennis—he sparked interest in the sport by hiring a health aide three years ago whose daughters now play regularly.  The Daily Gazette
