  • Schenectady’s new M&T Bank Center will debut Saturday, Sept. 6 with a Lee Brice concert at Mohawk Harbor—crews will quickly convert the ice rink into a stage while the $55 million arena, built for hockey and future events like comedy and trade shows, aims to boost downtown. This versatile venue is designed to seat 2,300 for hockey and up to 3,500 for concerts.  CBS 6 Albany
  • The St. George Greek Orthodox Church will host its 49th Annual Greek Festival from September 5 to September 7 at the Hellenic Center on Liberty Street. The event will offer live music, Greek food such as Moussaka and baklava, traditional dances, arts and crafts, raffles, and a 9/11 memorial service — all free for the community.  CBS 6 Albany

  • After a lightning strike in 1965 destroyed a bowling alley, founder Tom Hoffman shifted his focus to a self-serve car wash that celebrated 60 years today—now employing 600 people across 33 locations while it continues to innovate with advanced equipment.  WNYT

  • Professor Marso’s book Feminist Thinkers and the Demands of Femininity now has a second edition published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group that reviews the lives of well-known feminist thinkers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Germaine de Staël, Emma Goldman and Simone de Beauvoir — experts say its new introduction updates the work for today.  Union College

  • As the new school year begins, several local school districts face staffing shortages—Albany reports 113 job openings with 22 teaching roles and 24 food service vacancies, Schenectady has 37 openings with 4 teacher vacancies, and Troy lists 13 openings including one for special education.  CBS 6 Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul ordered flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff today from sunrise to sunset to honor Kevin M. Robert— a long-time flight paramedic who died last week.  CBS 6 Albany
