COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Approximately 700 Union College students, along with faculty and staff, will volunteer across Schenectady on Saturday, Sept. 6 for Toll Day, the College’s largest community service event. The Kenney Center for Community Engagement and Outreach will coordinate efforts to clean parks and support groups such as Bethel Northside, Goose Hill Neighborhood Association and Schenectady Urban Farms, as well as festivals including the Little Italy Street Fest.  Union College

CRIME NEWS

  • Mario Malcolm, a 30-year-old from Schenectady, pleaded guilty to DUI and possession of an illegal firearm after crashing his car on August 3 at Albany Street and Virginia Avenue—he was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in state prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.  CBS 6 Albany

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Schenectady JCC is hosting its annual film festival that will run through April and show documentaries and international films exploring the Jewish experience. The event will start on September 7 with a tribute to Gene Wilder — guest expert Alex Rabinowitz will lead a discussion of the film themes.  CBS 6 Albany

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Schenectady High School welcomed students on Thursday as classes began — six photos captured key moments on the day.  The Daily Gazette
  • The Legislature passed Assemblyman Santabarbara’s bill A7669 that lets Schenectady test speed cameras in up to 20 school zones over five years—pending the Governor’s signature. The pilot program will help improve student safety as the new school year begins.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Students across the Capital Region return to class today under a new bell-to-bell cell phone ban; Averill Park requires students to store their phones in lockers while Bethlehem uses a policy that was refined during summer school testing—13Investigates will explore how districts enforce the ban differently.  WNYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Letitia James and 18 state attorneys general have filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for D.C. to block the federal government from ending TPS for over 250,000 Haitian immigrants. The coalition argues that revoking TPS would hurt New York’s economy and public safety—placing families in danger.  CBS 6 Albany

SPORTS NEWS

  • Christian Brothers Academy will host the inaugural NYS Heroes Bowl on Saturday, September 6 at its campus with top high school football teams competing from across the state. The event will include a ceremony honoring 9/11 victims, military personnel—first responders and local fire departments who are remembered for their service.  CBS 6 Albany
