  • Schenectady Police mourn retired K-9 Flynn who died from illness over the weekend. He served from 2016 to 2020 alongside Detective Kevin Derkowski — he was known for his loyalty and courage.  WNYT

  • Best Companies — a Schenectady-based dry cleaner that handles fire restoration and logistics — will move into the former Pine Ridge Industries building at 52 Market St in Scotia, where it will establish its new headquarters.  The Daily Gazette
  • Nemer Volkswagen group opened its newest dealership today at 2240 Central Avenue in Colonie-Schenectady—marking its fifth dealership and second Volkswagen location in the Capital Region.  WNYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Union College's Kappa Alpha Society will celebrate its 200th anniversary on Friday, Sept 19th as nearly 350 alumni and members gather for a weekend event featuring food, music, fireworks, a pop-up exhibit in Schaffer Library, and plans to upgrade the Kappa Alpha Gate—an emblem of the fraternity's long history.  Union College

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scotia-Glenville High School was awarded national banner recognition by Special Olympics North America for promoting inclusion through its Unified Champion School programming that meets 10 national standards. The school is one of nine in New York to earn the honor and school officials praised teachers for expanding unified sports programs such as basketball, cheering, and bowling.  CBS 6 Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Schenectady's garbage sticker program cut trash collection by 9% but concerns over rising taxpayer costs remain — councilors note that extra bags from some residents cost the city money. Officials will study residents' disposal habits to guide future changes.  CBS 6 Albany
  • Attorney General Letitia James is proposing rules for social media companies to limit addictive features such as personalized feeds and night notifications—measures she says can cause anxiety and depression in kids and teens. The proposal is part of the Safe for Kids Act and will require companies to adjust how they engage young users.  WNYT
