EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Union College will cut its nearly 40-year Language Assistant program for the 2025-2026 academic year because of money and scheduling problems. Faculty and students will use Language Mentors and other native speakers—helping students learn languages with labs and weekly cultural events. Concordiensis
- ➤ Union College saw a 17% drop in international students this fall as new US visa policies make it harder to keep F1 and J1 visas—these rules include stricter social media reviews, limited interview slots, and a travel ban for 12 countries passed on July 8. Concordiensis
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The DEC announced that New York’s next free fishing day will be on September 27, when anglers can fish without a license while still following all rules—this day also honors National Hunting and Fishing Day and supports programs like library rod lending for beginners. - ➤ The New York State Police announced the Autism Awareness — Visor Card Program to help officers communicate with people with autism during public interactions; each patrol vehicle will have a card with simple icons and the public will soon be able to download a copy from the police website. - ➤ National Suicide Prevention Month in September urges our community to break the silence around suicide as experts point to over 49,000 deaths in 2023 and stress warning signs like mood changes and isolation—use available crisis resources like 988 to seek help.
