EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young Futures has partnered with Unity House to offer free financial literacy art classes for Capital Region youth at the Kathryn Allen Building in Troy — an informational session is set for Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon and the 10-week course will run from October 11 to December 20 with spots for children aged 7 to 13.  CBS 6 Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Schenectady is recruiting nine members for a new housing task force—applications are due tomorrow—to address local housing challenges.  The Daily Gazette
  • After more than 20 dogs died at boarding facilities, lawmakers and pet owners on Tuesday introduced the bipartisan Safe Pet Boarding Act. The bill — which calls for licensing, random inspections, staff training, proper ventilation and sufficient space — would require all boarding facilities to meet new safety standards.  WNYT
  • State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli is calling for a review of toll collections at the Schenectady Thruway exit—he finds that the Thruway Authority may have overbilled drivers, and officials will check the details soon.  The Daily Gazette
  • New York lawmakers have proposed the Safe Pet Boarding Act—set to require state licensing, random inspections, and proper care standards at pet boarding facilities after nearly two dozen dogs died, including 21 at a facility in Argyle. Senator Jim Tedisco and Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara said the bill will be discussed in the next legislative session to help prevent further tragedies.  CBS 6 Albany
