Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
Good morning, Schenectady.
The Mohawk Hudson Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club is hosting its annual swap meet on Saturday, April 26 at Schrader and Company in Burnt Hills from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—dozens of collectors will gather to trade and admire vintage boat motors that many have collected over the years.
Capital Region natives Ali and Thomas Bland have revitalized The Schenectady Trading Company at 10 N Center Street by addressing flooding issues and filling the store with unique local and vintage items.
They plan to start classes next month and have purchased the adjacent property—an old building with three apartments—to further renew the area.
On April 17 at around 7:19 p.m., Schenectady police responded to a domestic shooting on North End Drive after neighbors alerted them to a disturbance; officers found 44-year-old Donald Rickson with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the apartment where his wife sustained gunshot wounds to her hand and torso and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Lavender, the abandoned dog with a cut ear found in Schenectady last month, greeted police, Animal Control, and the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society with tail wags and trust during a special visit—while a local man was arrested in connection with her abandonment but no charges for abuse were filed—and investigators are seeking more information.
The Scotia-Glenville Central School District has introduced a bus stop-arm photo enforcement program to boost student safety.
The program will start on May 1 with a $250 fine for a first violation — fines will cover the program costs through a partnership with the Town of Glenville and BusPatrol.
Schenectady County will distribute 1,600 saplings next week to celebrate Arbor Day.
Friday, Albany-Saratoga Speedway celebrated its 60th season with a full house and races offering $7,500 and $10,000 prizes—although the property has been up for sale since last year and its future remains uncertain.
Promoters said racing events, including a Pro Stock autism awareness race and special nights for law enforcement, will continue regardless of the sale.
