Schenectady's budget leans on state aid that nobody has promised yet

$14 million-plusdeficit Schenectady is trying to plug

City officials are expected to ask for additional aid in the next state budget.

If you pay Schenectady property taxes, here's where the budget stands. City officials are expected to advocate for more state aid in the next state budget, and the Times Union calls that a gamble because the aid isn't promised.

The Daily Gazette reported the call for a special meeting and then followed up overnight.

  • Special meeting: Mon., Nov. 2, to pass the budget
  • Gazette headline: city “fails to break tax cap”
  • Gazette headline: city “violates charter budget deadline”
  • Times Union: the aid is meant to shrink a “massive tax hike”

New York's unemployment system is offline for 9 to 12 days for an upgrade

If you collect unemployment, the state shut off its online and phone services at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, for an upgrade. The outage is expected to last nine to 12 days, and you can't file new claims, certify for weekly benefits or access your account until it's over. Anything you filed before 5 p.m. Monday goes through as usual.

9 to 12 daysexpected outage of unemployment insurance services

Online and phone services went offline at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.

Payments will be delayed while the upgrade runs, and the state will notify customers when the new system, , is up. Commissioner Roberta Reardon says the old one relied on technology more than 50 years old.

  • Work search: keep completing three activities each week
  • Tracker: your claim will show as pending or paid
  • Phones: the new system works fully on a smartphone
  • Businesses: NYS-1 and NYS-45 still file through Tax and Finance

“You will not lose any of the money that you are owed.”

Roberta Reardon, state labor commissioner

The Wrap

Halloween's barely in the rearview mirror, and the Capital Region's radio dial is already jingling. Zoey 103.9 flipped to all-Christmas music early Sunday morning, with B95.5 and 98.3 WTRY following soon after. According to RadioInsight.com, that makes Albany the first radio market this year with three all-Christmas stations. Fa la la, indeed.
